DOWN ON THE FARM is a paid short film making commission from North Devon Moving Image which will result in a collection of 6 short documentary films about farmers and farming in North Devon. I am very privileged to have been chosen to make a 5 minute film for this project and will be filming a very interesting local character named Leighton.
Leighton farms a small holding near Stoke on the Hartland Peninsula, a beautiful and unspoilt area within North Devon's Biosphere Reserve. His mainstay crop is honey, farmed from several beehives, and supplements this with fruit and vegetables produced in some beautiful, extensive walled gardens. All his produce is sold locally and his season culminates in local garden shows where he consistently wins many prizes for his fabulous produce.
A fifties child, Leighton was brought up by the ‘make do and mend’ generation. Whether he was walking the coast at night with a prawn net or climbing the cliffs hunting for seagull eggs to eat for breakfast with his hand-picked wild mushrooms, he spent his childhood embracing nature and making the most of all it had to offer. This reflects in the resourceful way he farms today…
My team and I will be following Leighton and his partner Jill throughout 2019 as they work the land and tend to their bees. I am really looking forward to exploring Leighton’s way of life, a life which upholds a traditional farming process where nature and man work together, for mutual benefit.
